Big Road Fix: Jamaica’s $50B Infrastructure Plan for 2026
Brace yuhself, Jamaica – di Government just drop a whopper of a plan fi fix up di roads dem. Come 2026, a massive $50 billion infrastructure project will kick off, targeting some of di worst stretch from Kingston to Montego Bay. Minister of Transport, Daryl Vaz, announce di news at a press conference last Thursday, saying di work will cover over 300 kilometres of roadway.

“We talking ‘bout real change, not just patch-and-go,” Vaz said. “From Constant Spring Road in Kingston to Mandela Highway, all di way to Fairview in MoBay, we putting in new asphalt, proper drainage, and sidewalks.”
Di plan include a brand-new bypass from Linstead to Bog Walk, set to start by March 2026, which should cut travel time from Kingston to Ocho Rios by a good 45 minutes. Also on di list is di widening of di notorious May Pen to Williamsfield section, where accidents happen regular. Di work will be done in phases, with di first phase – focusing on di North-South corridor – finishing by December 2027.
But not everybody cheering yet. Miss Joan Williams, a shopkeeper from Linstead who drive di Bog Walk route every day, say she cautious. “Mi hear plenty promises before, but mi see how dem fix di road from Ferry to Portmore – dat good. If dem do di same quality, mi ready fi support. But if it’s just talk, den we back to square one,” she tell HowJamaica.com.
Di funding come from a mix of local taxes and a loan from di Caribbean Development Bank, plus some private investors. Di government says di project will create over 5,000 jobs, from labourers to engineers. But di real question on every Jamaican mind: will di traffic ease up? Vaz promise a dedicated lane for public transport and emergency vehicles during construction, so di hassle might be less than usual.
