Jamaica Grant Funding Small Business: $50 Million Injection for Entrepreneurs

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Government of Jamaica has announced a new grant funding program aimed at boosting small businesses across the island. The initiative, valued at $50 million, is set to provide financial support to entrepreneurs in various sectors, including agriculture, tourism, and technology. The announcement was made earlier this week at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston.

Minister of Industry, Investment, and Commerce, Hon. Aubyn Hill, said the grants are part of a broader push to stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level. “We know small businesses are the backbone of our economy. This money is not a loan; it’s a grant. You don’t have to pay it back. We want to see you grow, create jobs, and contribute to our local communities,” Hill stated during the launch event.

The program, officially called the “Jamaica Small Business Empowerment Grant,” will be administered by the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC). Applications open on June 1, 2024, and close on July 15, 2024. Each successful applicant can receive up to $500,000, depending on the nature of their business and the viability of their proposal.

One local entrepreneur who is eager to apply is Marcia Thompson, owner of “Taste of Jamaica” catering service in St. Andrew. She has been running her business for seven years, supplying jerk chicken and festival to offices and events. “This grant is a lifeline. I want to expand my kitchen and buy a new van for deliveries. Right now, I’m using my personal car,” Thompson said. “The timing is perfect because the summer season is slow, and this will help me prepare for the Christmas rush.”

To qualify, businesses must be registered with the Companies Office of Jamaica and have been operating for at least one year. Applicants also need to submit a simple business plan and a financial statement. The JBDC will host free workshops in each parish to help entrepreneurs prepare their applications. Workshops start on May 15, 2024, in Kingston, St. James, and Manchester.

This grant is part of the government’s MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) development strategy. According to the Planning Institute of Jamaica, small businesses account for over 70% of employment in the country. However, many struggle to access capital due to high interest rates and strict lending criteria from commercial banks.
