Jamaica Immigration to Canada and US Heats Up for 2026

Kingston, Jamaica – If you planning to pack up and head to Canada or the United States in 2026, you better start preparing now. Immigration experts say the demand for Jamaican workers and students is set to skyrocket, with both countries opening new doors for skilled labour and family reunification.

According to data from the Jamaican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, applications for Canadian visas jumped by 35% in 2025 compared to the year before. The Canadian government recently announced a new pathway for Caribbean nationals in fields like healthcare, construction, and agriculture, targeting 10,000 workers by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, the United States is expanding its H-2B visa program, which allows Jamaicans to work in non-agricultural jobs like landscaping and hospitality. Last year, over 8,000 Jamaicans got H-2B visas, and that number could hit 12,000 in 2026.

“Mi see a lot of young people who want to go abroad, but dem nuh know where to start,” says Pauline Richards, a 42-year-old teacher from Spanish Town. “The process is hard, but if you have the right paperwork and a sponsor, it can work out. Mi cousin just left for Toronto last month to work in a nursing home, and she say the pay is good.”

Canada’s Express Entry system is also getting a refresh in 2026, with more points awarded to applicants who have job offers in rural or northern communities. For Jamaicans with family in Canada, the Parent and Grandparent Program is reopening in March, allowing up to 5,000 sponsorships. Over on the US side, the Biden administration is pushing for a clean Dream Act, which could help thousands of Jamaican undocumented residents get permanent status.

But it’s not all smooth sailing. Both countries are tightening background checks and requiring more proof of ties to Jamaica, like property or family obligations. “Nuh just buy a ticket and hope fi di best,” warns immigration consultant Mark Williams of Kingston-based Caribbean Moves. “You need a clear plan, a valid passport, and sometimes a lawyer.”

For Jamaicans who want to stay local, the government is also launching a new “Work from Jamaica” initiative in 2026, offering tax breaks to remote workers employed by foreign companies. That could keep some people home while still earning dollars or pounds.

Practical Takeaway: If you’re eyeing Canada or the US in 2026, start gathering your documents now—birth certificate, police record, and proof of income. Check the official websites of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for updates. And remember, always use a registered immigration agent to avoid scams.
