Driving cross-country just got drastically easier. The latest extensions to Highway 2000 are finally open to the public, offering a scenic and incredibly fast route connecting the capital directly to the north coast.
For years, the drive from Kingston to Montego Bay felt like a full-day excursion. Traffic pile-ups, winding country roads, and inevitable delays were just accepted as part of the journey. But as of this month, that's officially changing.

The new stretch seamlessly bypasses some of the most historically congested bottlenecks in the central parishes. By cutting straight through previously inaccessible mountainous terrain, the highway provides a straight, multi-lane run that is as beautiful as it is efficient.
"It's honestly a game-changer," says Mark Tomlinson, a Kingston-based distributor who makes the trek twice a week. "What used to take me nearly four hours on a bad day is now just over two and a half hours, guaranteed. It's saving me gas, vehicle wear, and my sanity."
Toll Rates and Payment
While the convenience is undeniable, drivers should be prepared for the new toll structures. The Class 1 rates for the new section sit at $450 JMD, with heavy-duty commercial vehicles (Class 3) paying up to $1,200 JMD.
To keep traffic flowing smoothly at the plazas, the toll authority is aggressively pushing their T-Tag electronic payment system. In fact, drivers using the T-Tag get access to an exclusive express lane that entirely skips the cash lines.
Boosting Tourism and Business
The ripple effects of this infrastructure are massive. The Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce notes that freight trucks carrying imported goods from the wharves in Kingston can now supply North Coast hotels with unprecedented speed.
Furthermore, weekend tourism is expected to surge. Kingstonians who previously dreaded the long drive are now eyeing weekend getaways in Negril and Montego Bay, simply because the drive is no longer an exhausting chore.
