How to buy an off-grid solar kit on finance in Jamaica
Solar is expensive. Here are the best ways to finance your off-grid system using local Jamaican institutions.
Transitioning to solar power is a brilliant financial move—don’t get me wrong—but that upfront cost? Yeah, that can hit you like a truck. A proper off-grid or hybrid system for the average Jamaican home runs you somewhere between $1.5M and $3M JMD. Not exactly pocket change. But here’s the good news: a bunch of local financial institutions have rolled out what they call "Green Loans" specifically for renewable energy. So you don’t have to break the bank all at once.

Credit Unions and Green Loans
A lot of the big credit unions across Jamaica now offer specialized energy loans, and the best part? Their interest rates are usually way lower than what you’d get with a standard unsecured personal loan. All you need to do is bring them a proforma invoice from a certified solar installer. Once your loan gets the green light, the credit union often pays the installer directly. Simple as that.
NHT Solar Grants and Loans
Now, if you’re an NHT contributor, listen up. The National Housing Trust lets you tap into funding specifically for installing solar energy systems. Already have a mortgage with them? You might be able to add a solar loan to your account or even access grants aimed at making your home more energy efficient. And the interest rates? Honestly, you won’t find anything better out there.
In-House Vendor Financing
Some of the bigger, premium solar companies in Kingston and Montego Bay now offer their own in-house payment plans. It’s super convenient, I’ll give them that. But—and this is a big but—make sure you read the fine print real carefully. Watch out for hidden interest rates and what they’re asking for as collateral. In many cases, the solar equipment itself serves as collateral until you’ve paid off the system. So just keep your eyes open.
