In Jamaica, the Trade Board doesn’t play when it comes to importing cars. The basic rule is simple: you can’t bring in a regular passenger vehicle that’s older than 5 years, and for commercial vehicles like pick-ups, it’s 10 years. That age limit alone kills the dream for plenty of people who just want to ship in a cheap, older Japanese car or a classic JDM legend.

The "Classic/Vintage Vehicle" Loophole

Now, here’s the thing the Trade Board doesn’t exactly shout from the rooftops: the "Classic or Vintage Vehicle" exemption. Under the current Motor Vehicle Import Policy, a car can completely skip those strict age rules if it gets officially tagged as a Classic or Vintage car.

To qualify, the vehicle usually has to be at least 30 years old. So, if you’ve got your heart set on importing an iconic 90s ride—like a Toyota Supra, a Nissan Skyline, or a rugged old-school Hilux—you can legally bypass the age limit. It’s a solid hack if you’ve got the patience.

The "Returning Resident" Exemption

But what if the car you want isn’t quite 30 yet? Don’t worry, there’s another powerful loophole. Jamaican Returning Residents are exempt from the standard age limits for one personal vehicle. If you’ve lived abroad for at least three consecutive years and you’re moving back to Jamaica for good, you can ship your 15-year-old daily driver home with you. No fuss, no fighting the Trade Board’s 5-year rule.

How to Execute the Hack

If you don’t qualify as a Returning Resident, here’s the secret: find a licensed dealer who knows the "Special Purpose Vehicle" category inside out. Sometimes, older vehicles can slip in under specialized permits—like for agricultural use or specific transport needs—depending on how the car is modified. Just remember, always get your Import Permit from the Trade Board before you ship anything. Use the Classic or Returning Resident clause to make sure your vehicle doesn’t end up seized at the Kingston Wharf!
