The disaster occurred in the early hours of the morning when a massive section of a rain-soaked hillside collapsed, sweeping tons of mud, rocks, and debris into a densely populated valley below. Several homes and local infrastructure were completely buried in a matter of seconds.
Emergency response teams, including military personnel and specialized search and rescue dogs, were immediately deployed to the area. However, rescue efforts are being severely hampered by ongoing heavy rain and the constant threat of secondary landslides.
"The volume of mud is staggering," one rescue worker reported. "We are using heavy machinery where we can, but a lot of the search has to be done by hand to carefully look for survivors."
Authorities have evacuated hundreds of residents from neighboring vulnerable areas as a precaution. The region has been battling extreme weather patterns over the past few weeks, with unseasonably heavy downpours saturating the soil and making the steep terrain incredibly unstable.
As the golden window for finding survivors slowly closes, the nation waits with bated breath, hoping for a miracle for the 34 individuals still listed as missing.
