Types of DNA Tests
There are two main reasons people get DNA tests in Jamaica:
1. Paternity/Legal DNA Testing: Required by the US or UK Embassy for immigration, or for local court child support cases.
2. Ancestry Testing: To find out exactly which countries in West Africa your ancestors came from.
Pricing in 2026
For a standard legal Paternity Test (testing the alleged father and the child), local labs in Kingston and Montego Bay currently charge between $45,000 and $65,000 JMD.
If you need the results expedited for an embassy appointment, expect to pay a premium fee of around $15,000 JMD extra.
Can I do it myself?
If you just want an Ancestry test (like AncestryDNA or 23andMe), you cannot easily buy these in Jamaican pharmacies. You must order the kit online to a US shipping address (like Mailpac or ShipMe), have it flown to Jamaica, swab your cheek, and then courier it back to the US via DHL or FedEx.
By the time you pay for the kit ($99 USD) plus the two-way courier fees, an Ancestry test will cost you roughly $25,000 JMD total.
Trusted Local Labs
If you need a legal test, always use an accredited lab. Caribbean Genetics (CARIGEN) located on the UWI Mona campus in Kingston is the gold standard for legally binding DNA results in Jamaica.
