The Real Cost of Water Truck Delivery in Kingston & Portmore During Droughts

When the NWC pipes run dry during the summer droughts, panic sets in across Kingston and Portmore. Finding a reliable private water truck quickly becomes a desperate mission, and unfortunately, some drivers take advantage of the crisis by price-gouging.

Here is what you should actually be paying for water delivery in 2026.

Standard Pricing by Volume

Water is sold by the gallon or by the 'load'. The standard black water tank on top of a Jamaican house is usually 400 gallons, 600 gallons, or 1000 gallons.

Private trucks usually have a massive 4,000 to 5,000-gallon capacity.

In 2026, the standard rate for delivery in the Kingston/Portmore area is roughly $10,000 to $14,000 JMD for 1,000 gallons.

If you only need to fill a 400-gallon tank, you will still likely be charged a minimum trip fee of around $8,000 JMD. It is highly recommended to team up with your neighbor. You can buy 1,000 gallons together and have the driver split the load between your two houses.

Avoiding the Scams

1. The Dirty Water Scam: Always ask the driver where they sourced the water. It should be from a certified NWC hydrant, not a local river or questionable well. If the water smells heavily of chlorine or is slightly brown, refuse it immediately.

2. The Half-Load Scam: Some drivers will claim your 1,000-gallon tank is full before it actually is. Look at the water line on the outside of your black tank before paying.

Keep a trusted water truck driver's number saved in your phone year-round. Don't wait until a drought starts to look for one, because prices magically double when demand skyrockets.
