Net billing lets you hook your solar system up to the JPS grid and sell back any extra power you make during the day. It can seriously cut your monthly bill—or even get you a credit. But fair warning, the application process takes some patience.

Step 1: The GEI Inspection

Before JPS even glances at your application, the Government Electrical Inspectorate (GEI) has to inspect and sign off on your solar system. Your certified solar installer should handle getting this inspection scheduled. Once you pass, you’ll get a GEI Certificate.

Step 2: Submission to the MSET

Next, you need to apply for a Net Billing License from the Ministry of Science, Energy, and Technology (MSET). Your application will need your GEI certificate, proof of property ownership or a letter from your landlord, and the technical schematics for your solar setup. The Ministry checks everything over to make sure your system meets national safety standards.

Step 3: The JPS Interconnection Agreement

Once the Ministry gives you the green light, you take that license to JPS. You’ll sign an Interconnection Agreement that spells out the rate JPS will pay for your power. After that, JPS sends technicians to your place to install a special bidirectional meter. This meter tracks both the power you take from the grid and the power you send back to it.
