Crime in the corporate area has taken a terrifyingly high-tech turn. Authorities are warning of a new syndicate that isn't looking for your physical wallet—they are looking for your device's NFC chip.

The Invisible Pickpockets

By simply standing next to you in a crowded Half-Way-Tree plaza or brushing past you on a packed JUTC bus, sophisticated scammers using concealed RFID scanners can clone your digital bank cards and drain your accounts in seconds.

They carry small scanners hidden inside backpacks or shopping bags. As long as they get within a few inches of your smartphone or tap-to-pay credit card, they can extract the data.

"It happens instantly," a cybersecurity expert told HowJamaica. "They walk through a crowd, bump into people, and by the time they get to the other side of the plaza, they have skimmed five different credit cards."

How to Protect Yourself Today

The scariest part of this new crime wave is that you won't even know it happened until your card declines at the supermarket or you check your online banking app days later.

Three immediate steps to secure your money:

1. Turn off NFC: Go to your phone settings and disable NFC (Near Field Communication) immediately when you are in public. Only turn it on when you are at the cash register ready to pay.

2. Buy an RFID-blocking wallet: If you carry physical tap-to-pay cards, invest in a specialized wallet that blocks radio frequencies.

3. Set Up Transaction Alerts: Call your bank and ensure you receive an SMS text message for every single transaction over $1,000 JMD.

Don't become the next victim of this invisible crime wave. Share this warning with your family members who aren't tech-savvy!
