STATIN Reports Concerning 19.1% Decline in Jamaica's Export Earnings

Jamaica's export sector has taken a significant hit, according to the latest data released by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN). The report reveals a sharp 19.1% decline in export earnings for the January to February 2026 period compared to the same time last year.

The drop is largely attributed to a downturn in the manufacturing and mining sectors, which have struggled with global supply chain disruptions and shifting international demand. Meanwhile, import bills have remained stubbornly high, placing additional pressure on the country's trade deficit.

Economists are urging the government to double down on export diversification strategies, particularly in the agricultural and agro-processing sectors, to buffer against external shocks. While the numbers are concerning, the Ministry of Commerce remains optimistic that trade agreements currently being negotiated will open new, lucrative markets by the end of the year.
