The travel industry is holding its breath right now. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin just doubled down on his threat to yank US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers from airports in so-called "sanctuary cities." And if that happens, international flights could get real messy.

Wah Dis Mean?

For the average Jamaican, this means potential flight delays or cancellations when traveling to US cities like New York or Los Angeles. If CBP officers are withdrawn, airports can't process international arrivals, forcing reroutes or trip disruptions. Small business owners relying on US suppliers or customers via these hubs face shipment delays and higher costs. Diaspora Jamaicans in sanctuary cities could see reduced direct flights or burdens of traveling through non-sanctuary airports, adding time and expense. This also strains family visits and remittance flows, as key gateways become less reliable. The uncertainty alone hurts bookings and travel plans.

Likkle History

In 2017, Jamaica faced similar disruption when the Trump administration's travel ban caused chaos at US airports, stranding Jamaican travelers and sparking protests.
