Dr. Chang: Education Key to Poverty Reduction & National Upliftment
“Education is the most powerful weapon we’ve got to break the cycle of poverty, lift people up, and build stronger communities across Jamaica,” said Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, Minister of National Security and Peace. He made it clear the government isn’t backing down on putting money into education, calling it the foundation for real, lasting national growth and giving people a way to move up in life.

Speaking at a community meeting in Montego Bay not long ago, Dr. Chang talked about how learning can truly change lives, especially in places that have been left behind. He pointed to a bunch of government programs already rolling—things like school feeding initiatives, fixing up old school buildings, and bringing in technology so the digital gap doesn’t leave anyone out, from early childhood all the way through to college.
Now, from a security angle, Dr. Chang laid it out plain and simple: when you’ve got a solid education system, you’re building peace and stability. He explained that if you give young people real skills, teach them to think critically, and open doors for decent jobs, you cut down the chances they’ll get pulled into trouble. It’s about stopping crime before it starts, not just chasing after it afterward. That’s how you make communities safer and more productive.
The Minister didn’t hold back in calling on parents, guardians, and community leaders to get involved in their kids’ schooling. He said it takes all of us pulling together to make it work. He also pushed the idea of never stopping learning—whether it’s picking up a trade or going for higher education—so Jamaicans can keep up in a fast-changing world and help drive the country’s economy forward.
Dr. Chang wrapped up by saying the government’s spending on education isn’t just an expense—it’s a smart bet on Jamaica’s future. He painted a picture of a nation where every kid gets a real shot at reaching their full potential, building a more prosperous, peaceful, and fair society for the long haul. That, he said, is how Jamaica becomes a shining example for the whole Caribbean.
