The announcement has sent shockwaves through the footballing world, blending traditional football culture with the glitz and glamour usually reserved for the NFL Super Bowl or the NBA Finals.
According to FIFA officials, the rings are designed to be a permanent, personalized keepsake for the players. While the World Cup trophy must be returned to FIFA after the celebration, and medals are often tucked away in display cases, a championship ring is something players can wear to showcase their ultimate achievement.
"Winning a World Cup is the pinnacle of a footballer's career," a FIFA spokesperson said. "We wanted to give the players a truly spectacular piece of jewelry that reflects the magnitude of what they have accomplished on the global stage."
The design of the rings will allegedly feature diamonds representing the number of goals scored by the winning team during the tournament, along with custom engravings of the player's name and squad number.
While some traditionalists argue that football doesn't need to adopt "Americanized" traditions, many younger players and fans are absolutely thrilled by the idea. The first set of these extravagant rings will be awarded at the upcoming World Cup final.
