Can I Marry My Jamaican Partner and Get Dual Citizenship?
Marrying a Jamaican does not auto-grant citizenship. Jamaica allows dual nationality; apply via PICA Form R1 (citizenship by marriage). Fees, documents, 24-month timeline.
Yes, you can marry your Jamaican partner, and Jamaica accepts dual citizenship — but the wedding itself does not switch on a Jamaican passport. After you are legally married, a non-Jamaican spouse may apply for citizenship by virtue of marriage on Form R1 through the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) or a Jamaican embassy/high commission/consulate. PICA states that compliant files are prepared for the Minister within twenty-four (24) months.
If you already have Jamaican parentage, you may qualify faster under citizenship by descent instead — see our dual citizenship requirements for US citizens and application checklist.

How citizenship by marriage works (PICA)
From PICA’s Categories of Citizenship — Citizenship by virtue of Marriage:
- Complete Registration Form R1 in duplicate (available via PICA, Jamaica Printing Services, or missions; also linked from pica.gov.jm).
- Sign before a Justice of the Peace, Notary Public, or other person authorised to administer oaths.
- Submit to PICA, 8 Waterloo Road, Kingston 10, or the nearest Jamaican mission, with original documents.
Documents PICA lists
- Official marriage certificate
- Husband’s and wife’s birth certificates or Certificate of Jamaican Citizenship
- Both current passports
- Decree Absolute if previously divorced
- Police certificate from the country of last residence (before Jamaica, where applicable)
- Change-of-name documents if relevant
- Two certified passport photos (PICA’s photo rules; certification ≤6 months; no embossed seal)
PICA may request more information. Applications referred for investigation are not guaranteed to meet the published timeline.
Fees (confirm on PICA before you pay)
- Local: J$10,000 regular / J$15,000 expedited (non-refundable; JMD only)
- Through missions (published): about USD$100, CAD$110, GBP£60, EUR€74
Getting married in Jamaica (high level)
You still need a valid marriage licence, an authorised marriage officer, and registration so the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) can issue the certificate you will later use for R1. If you marry in Jamaica then move abroad, order certified copies early — see Jamaican marriage certificate from abroad.
Foreigners should also plan immigration status (entry, extensions, unconditional landing where eligible) separately from citizenship. Citizenship is not a same-week substitute for a stay permit.
Dual citizenship: what you gain after approval
PICA notes advantages of Jamaican citizenship such as a Jamaican passport, working without a work permit, voting, and certain duty-free allowances. Until the Minister approves and you receive the certificate, you remain a non-citizen spouse for those purposes.
Practical timeline many couples follow
- Marry and register the marriage.
- Collect originals (marriage, births, passports).
- Get a police certificate for the foreign spouse.
- Apostille or authenticate foreign documents if the mission/PICA requires it.
- File R1 and track the ~24-month ministerial path.
- After citizenship, apply for the Jamaican passport separately.
HowJamaica can help with police records (/police-record/), apostilles, and TRN/document packages while you work with PICA. We do not decide citizenship applications.
