Step 1: The Customs Broker

Look, for a commercial shipment this size, you legally have to hire a licensed Customs Broker. No way around it. Before the vessel even docks, hand them your Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice, Packing List, and Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC). Your broker will handle the heavy lifting, preparing and submitting the C82 Form (Customs Entry) through the ASYCUDA system.

Step 2: Port Fees and Duties

Here’s the good news: solar panels are duty-free. But inverters and batteries? They might fall under different tariff codes, depending on their specs and how you plan to use them. So, you’ll still need to pay Port Handling charges, Storage fees (if you drag your feet clearing it), Environmental Levies, and GCT. Make sure you have the exact funds ready—either a manager’s cheque or an RTGS transfer.

Step 3: The Physical Inspection

Customs officials will want to get eyes on that container. That usually means stripping it down or running it through a scanner to make sure everything matches your packing list to the letter. Mess this part up—if they find any undeclared items—and your whole shipment could be seized or hit with a hefty fine.

Step 4: Haulage

Once customs gives the green light, you’ll need to contract a certified haulage company to move that container from the wharf to your warehouse. And don’t forget—your warehouse better have the right forklift gear to offload those heavy pallets of batteries and panels.
