How to Clear a Barrel at Jamaican Customs

Let’s be real for a second—clearing a barrel at the wharf in Kingston or Montego Bay can turn into a whole day’s mission. If you’ve ever done it before, you know the drill: long lines, hot sun, and a whole lot of waiting. But here’s the good news—knowing exactly what to do ahead of time can save you hours. So, let me break it down for you, plain and simple.

What You Need to Bring

Before you even step foot near the wharf, make sure you’ve got these things in your bag:

• A valid Government ID (Passport, National ID, or Driver's License)
• Your TRN card
• The Bill of Lading (the shipping company will send this to you)
• Cash or debit card to cover the fees

The Step-by-Step Process

1. Shipping Agent: First thing, head to your shipping agent’s office at the wharf. That’s where you’ll collect your delivery order and pay the handling fee.
2. Customs Check: Next, make your way to the warehouse. A customs officer will open up your barrel and give it a good look.
3. Valuation & Payment: Customs will then assess the flat-rate duty—usually between $6,500 and $8,000 JMD for personal effects. Pay that at the cashier.
4. Gate Pass: Finally, grab your gate pass, get your barrel loaded into your vehicle, and you’re on your way.
