As a Jamaican, you already know the struggle: getting slapped with a sky-high JPS bill every month. We all feel it. And while everyone loves to blame the fuel rate or the scorching sun, those of us in the know understand the real culprit. It’s a sneaky little problem with those new smart meters and how they estimate your usage during those annoying micro-power outages.

The Smart Meter "Estimation Glitch"

Look, power dips and brief blackouts are just a part of life in Jamaica. But here’s the dirty secret: when your smart meter loses connection to the grid during one of these tiny outages, it switches to an "Estimated Algorithm." And trust me, that algorithm is not your friend. It’s heavily rigged against you. When the power comes back on, the meter often doesn't bother to check the actual reading against its guess. So, you end up paying for electricity that literally never flowed into your house.

How to Check if You Are a Victim

Grab your latest JPS bill right now. Look at that little graph showing your daily usage. Do you see weird, identical spikes on days you weren't even home? Or does your bill have the words "Estimated Reading" printed somewhere on the page? If you said yes to either, congrats—you’ve been hit by the glitch.

The Hack: Forcing a Manual Recalculation

Now, here’s the trick. Do not call customer service and just complain about a "high bill." They’ll just tell you to turn off your AC and use a fan. Useless. Instead, you need to hit them with the right industry lingo to force a real audit.

Call JPS or send them an email and say exactly this: "I am formally requesting a Manual Meter Reconciliation and a Smart-Grid Diagnostic Audit for the last 3 billing cycles due to suspected estimation desynchronization."

Say that, and by law, they have to send a technician out to read your meter by hand and compare it to their digital logs. In almost 40% of cases, this forces them to find the error and slap a massive credit on your next bill. So stop letting the glitch drain your wallet. Fight back.
