Shipping Costs from China and USA to Jamaica Drop – Business Owners Rejoice

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Well, well, well. Look what finally happened. For the first time in over two years, Jamaican importers are catching a real break. Shipping rates from China and the United States to Jamaica have dropped big-time since the start of 2025, and small business owners and regular folks are finally feeling some relief.

Here's the deal. According to the Shipping Association of Jamaica, the cost to ship a standard 40-foot container from Shanghai to Kingston went from US$4,800 in December 2024 down to US$3,200 in February 2025. And from Miami to Kingston? That dropped from US$2,500 to US$1,900 over the same period. Yeah, you read that right.

“Mi nearly cry when mi see the new rates,” said Mark Thompson, who owns Thompson’s General Store in Half-Way Tree. “Since COVID, shipping was killing us. A bag of rice we used to import for US$15 was costing US$28 just to ship. Now we can finally breathe.”

So what's behind this? Logistics folks say it's a mix of more containers being available and a slowdown in global demand. Big carriers like Maersk and CMA CGM have also added extra sailings to the Caribbean, which means more competition and better prices for us.

“We have seen a 20 to 30 percent reduction in ocean freight from both China and the US,” said Paula Grant, a shipping agent at Kingston Wharves. “For a country like Jamaica that imports almost everything, this is big news. It means lower prices at the shop.”

Mark Thompson, who brings in everything from electronics to canned goods, says he's already passing some of the savings on to his customers. “Mi drop the price of a dozen eggs by $50 and rice by $100 per pound. Customers noticing and they happy,” he said.

But hold on, it's not all smooth sailing. The Jamaica Customs Agency says import duties and taxes haven't budged, and the exchange rate is still eating into profits. “We still paying 25 percent duty on some items, plus GCT,” said Thompson. “But cheaper shipping helps us keep the lights on.”

If you're a small importer, here's the advice: shop around. “Don’t just take the first rate your freight forwarder gives you,” said Grant. “Call three or four companies. The savings can be real.”

As of March 2025, shipping rates are expected to stay stable for now. But industry watchers say global events could shake things up anytime. For the moment though, Jamaican businesses are making the most of it.

Practical takeaway: If you import goods from China or the USA, request fresh quotes from at least two shipping lines or freight forwarders. Rates change weekly, and you could save hundreds of US dollars per container.
